Why would he know the duel is coming? I assume you mean that he knew the Battle Master effect was in play (so the outcome wouldn't matter). But even if that's the case, shouldn't he act like he doesn't know the Battle Master effect is coming?

I'm almost certain the battle master is town at this point so people pushing the battlemaster scum narrative to hit all the day 1 wagons are super scummy. But I guess that won't be clear to everyone else yet.
