Re: 20 Questions, Game 302
So I guess what I'm sayin is, I never did get an answer to my question about whether the person appears in an English-language poem. I would ask that QM not refuse to answer a question as asked simply because some third party asked for a clarification on what was a clearly-worded question.
Re: 20 Questions, Game 302
Also, the answer "did not originate in an English-language poem" should not be counted as part of the 20, because that question was never asked.

I will amend my answer. As far as I know this character has not appeared in an English language poem, defining poem narrowly. However this is just based on the character’s Wikipedia page.cdngooner wrote: ↑Tue Jun 04, 2024 1:12 pmSo I guess what I'm sayin is, I never did get an answer to my question about whether the person appears in an English-language poem. Edit - I will keep this info up, but I’ll change my answer to pass as I honestly am not sure.

Also, I apologize for also scratching Wattsthematter’s question yesterday. I was traveling so I didn’t notice who was asking the question and who had asked for it to be scratched.

No - but I will give a slight hint and say you are nearing the time period.

Re: 20 Questions, Game 302
Is there a well-known musical work featuring this character?
If yes, I guess Siegfried.

Re: 20 Questions, Game 302
I'm very interested to see who this will be. The same time period as Roland would be the High Middle Ages, and the folkloric characters I can think of have been eliminated: Tristan (and Isolde) is clearly Celtic, so no pass. Abelard (and Eloise) is a real person (I was surprised to find out). Lohengrin was the subject of a famous opera.
I'm going to guess Renaud de Montauban, and after that I'm probably tapped out.

Was this character's story written down for the first time in a Romance language, or by a native speaker of a Romance language? (Latin is not a Romance language.)

No to the best of my knowledge. Also I think this is the 20th question, so perhaps I will give some hints

Re: 20 Questions, Game 302
Hint 1: While I do not think this figure has appeared in an English language poem, he is mentioned very briefly in a Shakespeare play.
Re: 20 Questions, Game 302
I have to say, it has been fun trawling folklore articles on Wikipedia for potential answers.

Re: 20 Questions, Game 302
Here is another approach you can use. Take a look at:
https://www.opensourceshakespeare.org/concordance/
This is a list of every word that appears in one (or more) Shakespeare plays. Presumably the answer is somewhere in these lists.
You would presumably want to search at the bottom of each list (for the words that only appear once or twice).
Caution: proper names are not capitalized in the list.

Re: 20 Questions, Game 302
Hint 2: This figure is sometimes said to be *descended from* a character that is commemorated on an annual holiday or cultural practice
