Re: Twenty questions, round 296
Fascinating that this person was born in the last 120 or so years, yet the QM doesn't know exactly where.

Born 1934 or later?
If yes to both this and DreamTrawler's question, free guess: Kim Jong-il

Was this person a: scientist, economist, historian, athlete, or inventor?
Re: Twenty questions, round 296
I see where you are going with this question, and I thought of Tibet and Hong Kong also, but the question QM passed on was "born in what is now China, Taiwan or Japan." These places you ask about are all now clearly in, or out, of one of these countries.Born in Chinese Outer Mongolia, Japanese-occupied Manchuria or Japanese-occupied Korea?
The pass has to be because his birthplace is unknown, not because its political status is questionable.

Re: Twenty questions, round 296
If the QM is being really technical or political, they also could have passed because of the status of Taiwan I suppose. Though it is also the name of the island itself so idk.cdngooner wrote: ↑Wed May 29, 2024 5:24 pmI see where you are going with this question, and I thought of Tibet and Hong Kong also, but the question QM passed on was "born in what is now China, Taiwan or Japan." Re: Twenty questions, round 296
OK, I'll withdraw the question. But unless this person was born on one of the South Kurils, I don't get the pass. I guess that the ROC may still technically claim Outer Mongolia?DreamTrawler wrote: ↑Wed May 29, 2024 5:26 pmIf the QM is being really technical or political, they also could have passed because of the status of Taiwan I suppose. Re: Twenty questions, round 296
No. (For purposes of clarity, in this question and the related one from before, there are no linguistical tricks about the geopolitical status of Taiwan: I would have no problem saying that Ang Lee was born in what is now Taiwan.)

Re: Twenty questions, round 296
We need to drill down on the reason for the pass on place of birth. I assume the place is unknown, but Spartaculous could be playing tricks with the political definition of the birthplace.
Do you know, or can one find out on the person's Wikipedia page (if they have one), where this person was born (even if the political expression of that place is uncertain)?
