If no, Matthew Brady.
That's a good shout. It matches Hominidae's MO.

Most famous as a painter?
Yes, in the sense that this artist's primary medium was painting.

If yes, James Whistler.
No.

With an understanding that Hominidae's being tricky here...

Samuel Morse?

Since you're all struggling a bit, I'll update this to "pass". Definitely a painter, but "most famous as a painter" is a bit questionable.

I guess that means cdngooner has a free guess left.

Also you all have two questions remaining.

But "most famous for visual arts" was a yes. So we are looking for a visual artist, whose main medium is painting, but may be most famous for some other visual art. It couldn't be Morse, for example, because he is most famous as an inventor.

I was about to guess Winslow Homer, but he is very much most famous as a painter, and would not be a "pass" to that question.

I'm afraid that "pass" provided less clarity than you perhaps hoped for.

Of course, John James Audubon! I wanted to guess him earlier but excluded him because he was born in Haiti, and for some reason in my head I didn't think that was part of "North America", but of course by many definitions the Caribbean could be so included.

There are at least two people ahead of you on that guess, I think.

Technically I was the first person to ask:

"Is it John James Audubon?"

To be clear, Spartaculous wins this one I think. That definitely counted as a guess.

Fun round! Just got the next one posted.

The ruffed grouse painting is in honor of my dad, who entertained me while I was growing up with his imitation of the sound a ruffed grouse makes while lifting off of the ground like a helicopter.
