IMO, y’all are pretty close to the right answer. I’d like to say the person I chose is a bit on the obscure side, but I do believe he is pretty well known, and deserves to be recognized more.

All other questions are moot, since we have a winner! The person is Gregori Perelman, the person who proved the Poincaré conjecture (with help from other people, like Richard Hamilton). I wasn’t sure if one would call his work ‘scientific’, or research though, so that explains the pass.
