Also worth noting memes, folklore… I haven’t wanted to ask the question because I’m not sure how I would like to phrase it

Yes, those are also good options, although I think most folklore would have warranted at least a pass on the "first appeared in a book" question.Wattsthematter wrote: ↑Wed Mar 06, 2024 10:42 pmAlso worth noting memes, folklore… I haven’t wanted to ask the question because I’m not sure how I would like to phrase it

There's also musicals and plays. And serials (e.g., novels that appeared in magazines). Speaking of which,Hominidae wrote: ↑Wed Mar 06, 2024 10:50 pmYes, those are also good options, although I think most folklore would have warranted at least a pass on the "first appeared in a book" question.Wattsthematter wrote: ↑Wed Mar 06, 2024 10:42 pmAlso worth noting memes, folklore… I haven’t wanted to ask the question because I’m not sure how I would like to phrase it

Wasn't Dune originally published in a book? Might be wrong about that though...Aristocrat wrote: ↑Wed Mar 06, 2024 10:57 pmThere's also musicals and plays. Is this character significantly connected to one or more cultures in folklore?
Re: Twenty questions, round 215
Apparently it was originally in a magazine. Not sure if magazines count as a subset of books or not.DarthPorg36 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 06, 2024 11:06 pmWasn't Dune originally published in a book? Re: Twenty questions, round 215
Per wiki: Dune is a 1965 epic science fiction novel by American author Frank Herbert, originally published as two separate serials (1963-64 novel 'Dune World' and 1965 novel 'Prophet of Dune') in Analog magazine.
There are a decent number of mid 20th century novels / stories that did this, I think. Some Philip K. Dick ones for sure.

Was this character introduced in 1979 or later?

Re: Twenty questions, round 215
Maybe we should ask broader questions.
Was the character introduced in some form of printed media?
