Re: 20 Questions game 166
Okay. So, we have one question left. I don't want to ask one until everyone who wants to use their free guess takes it, but I do want to think a bit about what that question should be.
Right now, we know that the person was born in Asia in a place that was, at the time, a colony of some European nation. Questions have already ruled out south Asia and most of East Asia; basically the only places left are the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Of those two, I think that SE Asia [Burma, French Indochina, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia] is more likely - apart from being more populated, the fact that the QM asked for clarification on Jamie's question hints at the possibility.
The one other question that I could imagine being useful is something along the lines of whether her career was spent in Asia (presumably her homeland) or somewhere else (presumably Europe: think Freddie Mercury here).
Any thoughts?

This is a question to Spartaculous, NOT to modderpoel: Spartaculous, do you think the answers so far left Cyprus as a possible birthplace of her?

Re: 20 Questions game 166
I think my Q18 phrasing was clear that I was not including Cyprus as part of Asia for the purposes of that question. So no, I don't think Cyprus is left as a possibility.

Cyprus is technically in Asia.Spartaculous wrote: ↑Fri Jan 05, 2024 6:12 amI think my Q18 phrasing was clear that I was not including Cyprus as part of Asia for the purposes of that question. So no, I don't think Cyprus is left as a possibility.
But I can't think of any famous female singers from Cyprus.

Re: 20 Questions game 166
Okay, I will go ahead and ask one more question: was she born either in modern-day Vietnam, Cambodia, or Laos, or within 150 miles of the Sea of Galilee?

Re: 20 Questions game 166
So now it’s final guessing time. Obviously, you’re not down to 1 answer and probably you’re not down to 5 either. Is this a normal amount of information to go into final guesses or should I do one/more hints?
Re: 20 Questions game 166
I find this whole game quite misleading. None of the countries listed were ever part of the EU, even if their British or French colonial masters were. Like Diego Garcia or the Falkland Islands today, those former colonies were never incorporated as part of the home country, and never members of the EU.

Re: 20 Questions game 166
Forgive my lack of cultural education but I cannot name any famous singers from Vietnam, Cambodia, or Laos.

Re: 20 Questions game 166
I feel bad for not noticing the ambiguity of the EU question, but I guess none of us noticed it. Good job, Spartaculous.
My (probably wrong) guess: Khánh Ly

I don't understand either. I can't see how 9,15 & 18 can be consistent.cdngooner wrote: ↑Sat Jan 06, 2024 12:32 pmI find this whole game quite misleading. @GM if you want to hint would naming the place of birth make it a giveaway?

Re: 20 Questions game 166
When picking this singer, I expected you to find out she was from Asia before question 10. It never was the intend to make the fact she was born under colonial rule part of the quiz and by no means I intended to mislead anybody.
Final clue: I set up this quiz for my character to be guessed around the 15-20 and I was warned for obscurity so I made sure it would not be obscure. For all persons I checked the number of languages they have wiki pages in and for singers the number of monthly spotify listeners. In both ways of counting, she beats quite a few people who have previously been chosen.

Re: 20 Questions game 166
That guess indeed is wrong, you picked an artist that is nowhere near famous enough.
Re: 20 Questions game 166
Vietnam (or wherever) was part of a country (France) that (at one point in its history) is or was part of the EU. However, the founding member question was specifically about the current territory of those countries.damo666 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 06, 2024 2:00 pmI don't understand either. I agree that it's a bit questionable.

Re: 20 Questions game 166
I should note that I asked for a clarification on Q15 and gave the response above to the clarified versionmodderpoel wrote: ↑Tue Jan 02, 2024 10:48 pm1. Yes - real human being
2, 4. Living woman
3, 10. born between 1913 and 1971
5. Yes - born in Eurasia/green box
6, 7. Known for having a role in music, acting, or sports
8. No - see question
9. Yes - born in a country that is or was part of the European Union
11. No - not a British singer/musician
12. No - not an actress
13. No - not a singer who sings primarily in the English language
14. No - not born in an area that is currently part of Ireland, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Germany, or France
15. No - not born in a place that is currently controlled by a EU founder state
First hint:
For previous questions with undefined terms and concepts, I've chosen the definitions I found most reasonable.
Re: 20 Questions game 166
Vietnam was never part of France (like Canada was never part of Britain). It was governed by France, but was never incorporated as part of the country of France (as, for example, New Caledonia, Réunion, and St. Pierre et Miquelon are today. Vietnam was always a separate, but not independent country (as, for example, Diego Garcia, Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands are today).Vietnam (or wherever) was part of a country (France)

Re: 20 Questions game 166
I guess Fairuz. (I'm a little unsure because it looks like she may have done some acting - depending on your definition there - and I don't know if "French Lebanon" counts as France - but she does have nearly a million monthly Spotify listeners, because apparently that is now a metric we are using.)
