Re: Twenty Questions: Game 153
Correct- congratulations
Leopold V, Duke of Austria and Styria, took over the command over the German forces during the siege of Acre after the death of Frederick Barbarossa and his son.
The legend says that when Acre fell, he claimed equal honour and loot to the two kings Richard Lionheart of England and Phillip II of France by hoisting his coat of arms next to theirs. This demand was turned down, in particular Richard had his flag thrown in the dirt. The outraged duke hoisted instead his blood-soaked skirt, with a white stripe where the sword-belt was.
When Richard returned home, he had to pass through Austria, he was recognized and sized by Leopold’s men. Later he was extradited to the emperor, who negotiated the ransom- the enormous sum of 100,000 pounds of silver - about three times the annual income of the English crown at that time.
The people of England were pressed so hard to raise this sum (they already had to pay the Saladin tithe a few years before), that they developed their own legend- Robin Hood. Ironically, the rebels look forward to the return of king to stop the injustice by the authorities.
Leopold used his share of the ransom to found towns, a mint and build the city wall of Vienna. However, he was excommunicated for having taken a fellow crusader prisoner. After he fell during a tournament from his horse, his foot had to be amputated by three axe-swings. Nevertheless, doomed to die by gangrene, he was reconciled at his deathbed after promising to join another crusade and repay the ransom. (He died before either happened)

Great! But...
how did you know this off the top of your head?Hanging Rook wrote: ↑Thu Nov 09, 2023 8:04 pm-but free hint: two of his grandparents were from two different imperial dynasties, while another was a saint and the fourth was said to have descended from gods.

Yeah, I'm not sure he passes the dart test. I'll throw his name around my office today and see if anyone's ever heard of him.

Re: Twenty Questions: Game 153
it wasn’t off the top of my head, but the first two and the last I came over when I checked whether the Badenberger had any connections to an imperial (HRE) dynasty (like being a cadet branch) and then I tried to find something about the last remaining, and came over Aenead descends.Spartaculous wrote: ↑Fri Nov 10, 2023 12:34 pmGreat! Re: Twenty Questions: Game 153
I thought he is interesting enough, and can be narrowed down and I think we had more obscure characters here.
Probably he won’t pass the test, even in Austria, though most know the stories and legends behind the name there. And I bet you will also always remember those when you see the Austrian flag or watch a Robin Hood movie.
