They did apparently finally kill him off permanently at one point (season 5?) So it made sense to me. I haven't watched _South Park_ since, maybe season 2?

Not exactly, no. He was "permanently" killed at the end of Season 5, was absent for most of Season 6, but returned to life in the last episode of Season 6 and has remained a recurring (and usually alive) character since then.

I remember watching the first season of _South Park_ in college, when various groups of us were huddled around TVs in different rooms with the doors open and you could hear the laughs from the other rooms echoing up and down the halls... RIP, Isaac Hayes.
