Re: 20 Questions: Game 133
Clarification for my question: This, in my mind, includes countries like Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Georgia, as they were still under occupation after world war two, as well as Afghanistan, Iran, etc
Re: 20 Questions: Game 133
Can we just make the question simpler like this: of a nationality that is geographically connected to the Soviet Union?

How does that work out?
My answer to the question is that the location of his birth was never occupied by the Soviet Union or its military units.

No… you might say it did at some point during his lifetime but that would be debatable.

Re: 20 Questions: Game 133
Although if you're claiming it can only be one country, then you're clearly using a far narrower definition of losing WWII than I would... in which case it can't be

I don't think it can be him. He was born in a part of Galilee which was under British administration during the Second World War. I think Britain won WW2.

Re: 20 Questions: Game 133
I would argue that there are few places on earth that lost WWII more comprehensively than Palestine... but it does seem that your way of thinking is more in line with our question master'sJamiet99uk wrote: ↑Sat Sep 02, 2023 9:47 pmI don't think it can be him. Re: 20 Questions: Game 133
It depends on your definition of "lost". The territory he was born in was counted as being on the "allied" side during the conflict. The fact that the Palestinian population of that territory suffered terribly in the aftermath of the war is absolutely true, but their territory was on the "winning" side.Octavious wrote: ↑Sat Sep 02, 2023 9:51 pmI would argue that there are few places on earth that lost WWII more comprehensively than Palestine... but it does seem that your way of thinking is more in line with our question master'sJamiet99uk wrote: ↑Sat Sep 02, 2023 9:47 pmI don't think it can be him. Re: 20 Questions: Game 133
To use a rather clumsy football analogy, saying that Mandatory Palestine lost the Second World War because of the horror the Israelis would unleash upon the Palestinian people afterwards, would be a little like saying Liverpool did not win the 1989 FA cup because of the horrific events at Hillsbrough Stadium during that year's semi-final. Yet despite those events, the pub quiz answer to the question "which team won the 1989 FA Cup?" is clearly "Liverpool".

I agree wholeheartedly that that is a rather clumsy football analogy. How long after posting did you regret using it?Jamiet99uk wrote: ↑Sat Sep 02, 2023 10:02 pmTo use a rather clumsy football analogy, saying that Mandatory Palestine lost the Second World War because of the horror the Israelis would unleash upon the Palestinian people afterwards, would be a little like saying Liverpool did not win the 1989 FA cup because of the horrific events at Hillsbrough Stadium during that year's semi-final. But the trouble is that we are left with Nippon, and the great haiku poets are too old, and my knowledge beyond that is painfully limited

Christmas a few years ago when she broke Monopoly and ended forever the Boxing Day board game tradition. Before then I won more often than not.
