because this is a confession of knowing how to play Mafia coupled with alleged incredulity of "why are people fixated on my supposed newness?":

I find it interesting that you keep harping on my status as a newbie. If your definition of new is absolutely never playing a game of Mafia, then you are correct that I am not new. Am I experienced? Certainly not. I've played a few games on BGA, but as the new player, I was frequently voted off D1.

Howdy all! So are we just waiting for somebody to die? Is it the day right now? What type of town do we live in? A nice country village, big city, campground, etc? I imagine if we are dealing with some mafia goons then we are probably in the big city.

I really don't know the slang; this is my first time playing with y'all. It's frustrating not understanding what you are saying.

So to summarize:

- sweetandcool played Mafia before
- sweetandcool seems like a very smart and capable person given the general language & logic of their posts
- sweetandcool is clearly willing to pun in the effort to post so many responses
- I am sure sweetandcool is familiar with Google to find the MafiaScum website (which I successfully did back during my first game, for instance)

- this leads me to conclude that sweetandcool is intentionally singing the song "oh I'm so new, I really have no clue"
- seems like a familiar strategy...
- oh wait, that's exactly what MafiaKoala did that one game rdrivera referred to!

- and then is it really surprising folks fixate on your supposed newness after all of the above you posted?

PS: I would have not voted for a genuinely new player on D1 regardless (paying forward the karma and all that) – but I don't feel that someone merely new to this site but not the game warrants similar protections, sorry mate!

Hmmm, that's fair enough but this is not a strong defense – feels a bit like backtracking after being called out on it.

There is a difference between disliking the term and not understanding it. Your post in the Sign Up thread was intentionally crafted as "not understanding". Heck, you even asked if it's "SOS" – plus I note a distinct lack of emojis indicating sarcasm according to your own self-tell.

For instance, I agree with you that I personally dislike calling folks "scum" – and you will not find me using the term while referring to others outside of quoting them or referring to the MafiaScum site. But I don't go out and claim that I don't understand what it means, do I?

Anyway, back to work (and lurking) for me – but I'll be back to see if I should change my gut-instinct-magic-vote before EOD and will reconsider.

I think people are getting too comfy with Koala. Koala's play seems bizarre, and they really committed to it, voting for themself. I think at its peak there were 4 votes total for Koala. And then damo comes in and tells Koala to knock it off.

What if damo and Koala are mafia? And damo let the trust building exercise last for a while, and then tells his pal, Koala, to back out. Nobody thinks anything of it because Koala's play was ridiculous and instead of arbitrarily backing out, someone (damo) helped them save face and get off scot free.

Now most people seem to have a favourable opinion of Koala, thinking they are most likely Townie. Mission accomplished if my conspiracy theory were true.

One last thing before I go – I do give you brownie points for this theory.

I am certainly not going to bother defending myself after trying to drive my own wagon – but let's just say I doubt anyone who has played with me before is going to fall for a "Koala changed his behavior because so-and-so told them to"...

I realize I've undermined my credibility a bit here. To explain, I have a real-life character flaw where sometimes I act like I am not familiar with something I hate. I hate most slang so not only do I refrain from using it, but in some cases feign ignorance (please note this is a visceral reaction rather than a calculated reaction). The "sus" business is an example of that character flaw. (by the way, I was not being sarcastic, though I was being dishonest). I don't think I've reacted that way since. In other cases I have truly not known slang you all are using since it is vastly different from what I saw on BGA.

Since we are all talking about it, can anyone explain what "based" means? It has been driving me crazy since I see it popping up over the Internet and a Google search just tells me the non-slang definition.

I'm hesitant to vote a newcomer (he's not a newbie, he's played before), but there is a LOT of steering coming from him and not a lot of thinking things through or getting information.

What exactly do you mean "steering" in this context?

Why is this an interesting theory? It's not. We see nonsense like what Koala did all the time here. It's only bizarre to Sweetums because he's new here. Neither Koala nor Damo is new here, they don't need to engage in any of that as scum.

Other posts that seem like a lot of pointing fingers. (The following are not good examples, but I also find that he's hedging a lot—I'm interested that his tone is so confident when he's generating conspiracy theories or calls to action, but that he feels the need to hedge in other places.)

Too many conclusions in that last post, so we'll make the final conclusion a call to action for the players:

Calls to action: Vote Bonatogether to save me a headache. Vote Fox for being the best candidate for Mafia Traitor. Vote Jamiet because they might be a dumb Mafia Goon jumping on the Koala bandwagon. Or vote damo because they seem too trustworthy.

Not enough information to conclude anything about Ghug. Just the suspicious #210 post. Why would a townie vote for Koala?

So if I'm forced to decide scum/not scum, I guess more likely to be scum.
