The Republicans are in line with the same political thought of the founders and most of the mainstream political figures throughout our history. The modern democrats though are not and do not follow any strand of American politics. Their form of politics is based around Marx and communism which is a European invention from the 19th century. So, really there is one American political party (Republicans) and one Marxist/communist/European political party (Democrats)

Simple: The Republicans uphold, honor, and promote the Constitution of the United States. They aren't trying to suspend or remove the Constitution. The Democrats are and they want to replace the Constitution (which they call a charter of negative liberties) with a Marxist style government.

No freedom of speech (anyone who disagrees with them is a evil), no right to defend yourself (disarm populace), nationalization of major industries (healthcare, inroads in auto), oppression of political opponents and parties (smear campaign against Republicans and deliberate misrepresentation of truth), removal of major government documents (replacing the Constitution with something else), ending free elections (every time Democrats lose it is 'russian interference'), I could go on, but you get the point.

The constitution restricts the ability of the government to take certain actions, and grants certain rights to citizens, but it is not a system of government in itself.
