The American Civil War ended in 1865 so if he was an adult during the Civil War he would have been quite old by 1900 - but it's not impossible, as the two oldest Union solders from the Civil War to die passed away in 1953 and 1956 respectively.

I guess there was also the Mexican-American War just after the Civil War. The last surviving US veteran of that war died in 1929.

Mind you none of these people are famous for anything other than surviving into old age, so....

I know that that was probably just a typo, but the Mexican-American War took place before the Civil War.

I thought about the Civil War because Confederate generals would be best remembered in the Southern region of the United States.
