Clarification: This is not a new question but since I was criticised for my response to the "artist" question previously - can you just confirm, does "not an artist" also mean "not an actor or theatrical performer"?

I assume from this that he was awarded an honorary doctorate, or at one time or another self-styled himself as "doctor" without any qualification to that effect.
