Chemist is one option. Also computer scientist, geologist, environmental scientist and possibly including social sciences.

Hard to fathom how a scientist who never wrote a popular book could meet the 50% Dart Test. Ideas anyone?

Regarding my last answer. The person wrote some books - most not for the general public. However, one of his books was less technical and did sell half a million copies over a span of time.

Could be an economist, psychologist. But I agree, most scientists write books. Maybe the term bestseller is a bit vague. I guess the standard for a fiction bestseller is a lot higher than a scientific bestseller, so if you measure the sales of a scientific book by the standard for fiction.....
