We’re at the beginning of seeing if it’s a thing. I brought this up because I’m interested in trying to identify if people are lying in oral speech or written speech. The proposition is that people who lie by try to sound more authoritative by not using contractions.

Here are some real world examples.

“I did not have sexual relations with that woman… Miss Lewinsky” – Pres. Bill Clinton 1998
“”I want to officially and for the record state the following facts: My husband [Guy Ritchie] and I are not planning on getting a divorce. …. I am not romantically involved in any way with Alex Rodriguez. – Madonna 2008
“I can emphatically say I am not on drugs.” “I have never had a single positive doping test, and I do not take performance-enhancing drugs.” – Lance Armstrong 1999, 2004
“I say that I am innocent of those charges.” – Jerry Sandusky 2004
“No, no. I did not and I had absolutely nothing to do with her disappearance.” – Scott Peterson when Dianne Sawyer asked if he murdered his life, Laci. 2003

As Jamie said earlier in mafia sometimes scum tell the trust and town lie. But I would suggest that scum lie every game just by pointing the finger at someone they know isn’t scum. To test this we could first look at every instance in the last 71 games where contractions have been avoided and see if overall scum avoid contractions more than town. We could then break that down player by player to see if the theory holds for every player. Perhaps it’s pronounced for some and for others it’s negligible. We also need to look at if English is the second language for some players and if that has an impact. Perhaps we could also look at age ranges and gender to look for patterns. Mafia is an
Ideal game to test this theory and we probably have enough data to make a start.

I’d also like to look at words per post in detail. Do scum keep posts short to look busy? Perhaps we could even look at average word length for every player when they are town and scum. Perhaps scum become more formal and use longer words. The differences may be tiny.

If we could prove any of this, it would be interesting even if people then start to adjust how they play in future.

So, in summary, it may be silly, but it’s the kind of silliness I like. I don’t have the skills to bot-read the previous games, but I know you guys are a clever bunch.

This basic proposition is undermined by the fact that some people tend to use a more verbose writing style than others. Some people tend to use shortened forms and abbreviations more often than some other people. I purport that you know perfectly well, that I am one of the people who tends towards being somewhat more verbose.

Look at Bozo's D1 language as another example:

My family has a whole pack of huskies. I love them, and my dog is a husky/aussie mix, but they are fucking crazy dogs
