END OF DAY ONE

The long line of entrants shuffled slowly forward towards the checkpoint. Periodically a gravelly voice issued from a speaker on top of the inspection booth.

"NEXT"

Arstotzkans were let through. Mostly. If their papers were in order. Occasionally one would trudge back in the direction of the queue, ashen faced, their passport stamped "DENIED". A man from the neighbouring country of Impor was next in line.

"I have waited in this damn line since for eight hours. I hope was worth it."

The official denied his passport.

"Arstotzkans only."

"Unbelievable. Go to hell."

Suddenly there was a disturbance part-way along the line. Several of the entrants had become increasingly suspicious towards an odd-looking young man in an ill-fitting coat. He was very quiet, but seemed to murmur to himself from time to time. Maybe he was hiding something.

"Hey you, what's that under your coat? What are you hiding?"

"If he is criminal, they might close border!"

A soldier walked over.

"What is problem here?"

Someone in the queue pushed the confused young man towards the soldier. As he stumbled forwards, a frightened cat jumped out from under his coat, and ran off. The soldier gripped the man's shoulder.

"You have permit for cat? No? Smuggling animals across border is crime. May carry disease. Very bad. You must come with me."

The man was led away and would not be seen again.

BONATOGETHER has died. He was Beleveski Kilchentov, the VANILLA ENTRANT.
