Can you sell me on why this is a good thing to do? You tried last game and I question the validity in it immensely...

I generally think town is more likely to mislynch than hit scum on Day 1. Rather than sacrificing some poor townie for basically no reason whatsoever, I like Day One No Lynch because it saves us a townie and forces scum to make the first move, which town can then use to start building actual cases.

Except I didn't think about the Serial Killer, and I'm not convinced (yet) that Day One No Lynch works out with that... So I guess fuck it.

Agreed. Past history doesn't matter since it's random anyways. It's well known among mathmaticians that randomity will result in very low probability events occurring (e.g., 5 heads in a row).

His D1 no-lynch proselytizing struck me wrong, and I was further bothered by his refusal to back it up much at all in his next post and went with a no-reason vote. When worcej mentioned he did this last game and I just checked that he was in fact scum in M37, this indicates a desire to not mimick play last game. This makes sense as much as anyone to me for a vote in the first two hours.

These NL arguments always fail to consider that the way we get better at lynching as the game goes on is by looking at the opinions of and on dead players. A lynch, even one of town, tells us significantly more than a nightkill, and a nightkill only tells us anything if it comes after some information is established.

If we sit here not lynching today and then xorxes dies tonight, what have we learned beyond xorxes's role?

I have always advocated Day One No Lynch. It's only been this game and the last that my commitment to that particular faith has been challenged by the inclusion of a serial killer in the setup.
