tbh QuickTopic only gets used due to sheer inertia/legacy, it was hip in the mid-00s or so when online mafia first came into being and never switched out because it worked, but there’s got to be something better anyway. we’ll take this opportunity to figure out a more modern way to handle private comms.

QuickTopic does exactly what is required of it. It's simple, easily searchable, recognises html markups, and (until now) allowed threads to remain on file after you'd finished with them. It's a shame something that works perfectly well is being discontinued.

I agree that having to switch is annoying, but QT was firmly stuck in 2003, so I'm struggling to find too much sadness within me.

We're looking at alternatives, but Discord seems like the most straightforward, current, and widely-used option.

2cents - Discord for private chats is totally fine, but be sure to realize there are ways to cheese activity.

Best thing I know is every private chat needs to be it's own server that is created by the GM, with invites controlled accordingly.

We had a God QT on Discord in one of the recent games that used this approach.

I'm also considering making chats in the WebDip discord that are only visible to the appropriate people, which should allow for more long-term searching, but it's not set in stone yet.

You can see who belongs to what servers on Discord and you can see what roles people have internally on each server. I'd be very cautious using it and only do so if you know it well.

You can only see *mutual* servers, and you can add channel-by-channel permissions outside of a role, so there shouldn't be any issues from a technology standpoint.

Discord is definitely capable of handling things for us technologically. My main concern personally is that it requires people to maintain an active account separate from their webDiplomacy account. Not requiring that was the main draw to QuickTopic IMO.

belatedly realized that this would make viewing them postgame difficult, not to mention not work for God QT.

Hence why I said only do it if you know it well. A GM making a mistake has blown up a fair number of games. Ask me how I know.

It is worth considering that not all GMs are going to be discord-savvy. Any solution that requires council aid seems undesirable.
