Re: MAFIA 63: THE SCOURGE [HIDDEN]
I'm debating faking a cop scan just to highlight how many people aren't here.

Re: MAFIA 63: THE SCOURGE [HIDDEN]
CHAPTER 9
Jess led the regiment through the tunnel, her flashlight creating a ray of light in front of her - the rest of the cavern masked in complete darkness. Her footsteps reverberated through the tunnel. Combined with the rest of the Regiment it sounded as if an entire army was stampeding through. In reality, she only led the ten members still remaining of her squad. Only ten left. She did not allow herself to dwell on that thought.
“Let’s take a break” she called out to the rest of the group. She took a sip of water as the rest of the regiment took off their packs and relaxed. Jess took off her warm coat and stuffed it into her backpack – the inner lining of the coat was moist with sweat. Was it just her, or was it warm down here? Considering the harsh conditions out in the wind, she would not question it too much. She glanced back at the rest of the group and several had also discarded their warm clothes.
“Jess,” a voice shouted from around a bend up ahead, “You’ll want to see this.”
Jess raced ahead, following Samantha’s voice. She rounded the bend and saw her roommate facing the rock wall of a small cavern that the tunnel had opened into. The beam of her flashlight panned across the face of the surface, and Jess could make out ridges throughout.
“What is this?’ asked Jess.
“I don’t know” replied Sam. “It looks like glyphs of some sort. They go from the floor to ceiling on this entire wall. Whatever it is, something made them.”
“Scourge?” asked Jess.
“Maybe.” Replied Sam.
Jess turned back to where she had come and shouted for the rest of the group. An audible groan unintentionally reached Jess’s ears in response, amplified by the acoustics of the tunnel. She smiled as the regiment rounded the corner chasing the sound. They reached the wall and began staring just as Jess had.
“Everyone light up a portion of this wall. Let’s see what this is.”
Lights began shining across the entire wall as they coordinated spreading the beams. They were silent as the took in what was displayed. At center of the mural was what appeared to be a geyser, its circular base at the bottom, and swirly lines moving up from there. Above the lines there was an enormous face. It was not human, though it was not Scourge either. It had eyes and a mouth, but had what appeared to be three horns protruding from its head. The mouth was open and the swirling lines from the geyser appeared to be inhaled by whatever this face was. Surrounding the geyser and this face, were dozens of smaller figures, hands raised in what looked to be celebration. They appeared to be denoting the Scourge species, but it was difficult to be certain given the carving.
Nobody said anything for what seemed like minutes.
“What are we looking at?” asked Private Reese.
“Those look like Scourge on the sides,” said Private Hartman, “but what is that thing in the center?”
“I don’t know. But I think its tied to the Scourge,” Jess said back. “Natalie can you draw this quickly?
Natalie nodded and began drawing a copy of the mural on a notepad. Jess walked around, shining the light on several of the other walls but there were no other carvings in the chamber. She found a tunnel on the other side and began walking through it, shining her light ahead. She was certain now that the temperature was warmer down here – her hands clammy from sweat. She took a few steps forward and heard something. A faint, nearly undetectable buzzing coming from wherever this tunnel was heading.
“Form up,” she whispered, just loud enough to get the attention of the rest of the squad.
“There is something up ahead,” she said to her soldiers now huddled around her. “We move forward as quietly as possible. Look for my hand commands as we approach. Be careful.”
With that Jess continued forward, now with rifle drawn. The rest followed behind her as quietly as they could. The buzzing grew in intensity and now sounded like a low-pitched humming. Meanwhile the temperature continued to rise and beads of sweat now formed on Jess’s brow. A light appeared faintly at the other end of the tunnel beckoning her forward.
Jess finally reached the opening where the light poured into the tunnel. She stopped the rest of the squad behind her with a quick hand signal and then peeked her ahead around the corner.
She could not believe what she saw.
An enormous cavern was bathed in light and heat. The ceilings rose to incredible heights, and near the top was a glowing device the lit the entire chamber. The walls were adorned with more carvings like the one they had found – but massive in comparison. Jess could have studied them for hours, but her eyes were glued to more problematic surprises. The center of the chamber housed a massive geyser – at least four times larger than the biggest geyser at the geyser field. She could feel the intense heat from hundreds of meters away. It spewed precious fuel into the cavern. She followed it upwards to where there was an opening back to the surface. The most unwelcomes sight was the hundreds of Scourge between her and the way out.
The Scourge were responsible for the noise. They hummed in deep throaty way, their voices forming almost a rhythm. They all faced the geyser in what appeared to be some sort of trance or ritual. Close to the geyser were hundred of small oval objects. They looked like rocks but were too smooth to be stone. That is when it hit Jess – those were eggs! They were sitting in some kind of hellish Scourge hive. The heat from the geyser must be why the eggs were here and would explain the worship of the geyser by the Scourge.
“We need to find a way to get to the surface,” said Jess pointing to the opening across the chamber.
Several seconds passed before anyone answered.
“There is no way we can get past all of those” replied Sam. “And even if we do, we can’t outrun them on the surface.”
“We’ll just block them in, the same way as before” said Jess.
“Ok. But how are we going to create a distraction. That’s more than a few Scourge”
No response.
Then a sigh.
“Like this,” said Private Hartman. And before Jess could say anything Isabelle Hartman raced across the cavern, behind the Scourge who faced the geyser at the center of the cavern. She reached the other side and gave a thumbs up to the rest of the group. Jess’s mind raced for ideas but came up blank.
Suddenly, “HEY SCOURGE! HEY OVER HERE. I FOUND YOUR HIDEOUT” Isabelle shouted.
The Scourge turned to the noise and the humming stopped. They shrieked and rushed towards Isabelle.
“Move! Move! Move!” shouted Jess as she raced with the rest of the Regiment up towards the opening to the surface.
She did not look back.

I hate that bona voted himself and then dipped. If he had voted bozo, it would have been a one vote difference. It might not have mattered, but it frustrates me so much.
