CHAPTER 7
“Do you think they are gone?” Sam asked.
“Not sure,” replied Jess, eyes still glued to the cave entrance.
The 7th Regiment had settled in for the night. Their bedrolls and bags had been setup, and they had eaten and were now resting from the long journey. They had broken into several two person teams set for two hours of watch each. Jess and Sam, the two gunners of the squad, had stayed awake to this point. The two had not discussed their schedule, as the Scourge would have a difficult time funneling through the cave opening with two rifles covering the only way inside. The current watch duo was Jess’s other roommate Kaitlyn, and another member of the infantry Private Kelsey Sash.
“I don’t think they would rush in now. It would be suicide. We need to get rest too, Jess. Why don’t I take the first watch and then can wake you in a couple hours?” asked Sam.
“You ‘re probably right. I don’t think they are going to come. But let’s play it safe” replied Jess, though her body protested at the thought of continuing. Her muscles ached from continuously aiming her rifle, and her mind strained from the nonstop focus she had endured.
“She’s right,” said Kaitlyn. “You’ll be no good tomorrow if you don’t get any sleep Jess. And they need you. We all need you.”
Kelsey nodded in agreement.
“What do you think they want from us?” asked Jess to nobody in particular. “They attack us at the geyser fields, but they don’t seem to want anything. They don’t use the fuel from the geysers. They don’t take our bodies for food. They leave the spears and rifles behind. I just don’t understand.”
“Maybe they just like killing” said Sam.
“Do you really buy that? Can you think of any other animal that kills just to kill?”
“No” admitted Sam. “But I don’t have any other answer. And frankly, I don’t care. I just know that they kill us, so I’m going to kill as many of them as I can.”
Jess did not know if she agreed with a mindset that absolute. But she did know that as long as these beast were killing her friends, she would do everything in her power to stop them. Right now, that meant killing as many as possible. She hoped this expedition would provide more answers.
She finally stood and walked back to where someone had setup her bed roll and bag. “I will sleep for one shift, and then you wake me up. OK?"
“Good. We will be fine until then. Get some rest.” replied Sam.
It did not take long for Jess to fall asleep. Her mind was running a million miles an hour, but the exhaustion of her body trumped her mind this time.
She woke up to gunfire and shouting.
Several Scourge pushed forward into the entrance of the cave as red streaks flew into them. The laser fire seemed to have no impact! It took a few moments for Jess’s eyes to adjust to the scene in front of her. The beasts in the front marched slowly towards them – enormous shields covered their advance from head to toe. Samantha’s rifle fire was simply absorbed into the shields, leaving black char marks where they connected.
“Shit. Shit. Shit!”
The rest of the Regiment was now awake and getting their armor and spears ready. Both Kaitlyn and Kelsey were in front of Samantha near the entrance of the cave, spears pointed towards the advancing Scourge.
“What do we do?” someone shouted.
“Form up” shouted Jess, her mind racing.
Suddenly the two enormous shields moved to the side in a synchronized maneuver. Jess watched as several Scourge raced forward through the opening now in the center.
“The middle!” she shrieked.
The first Scourge reached the two guards, club swinging. Kaitlyn deftly dodged the club with a sidestep to the right and buried her spear forward through the neck of the beast. A second poured through and was met with a similar fate from the spear of Kelsey. The creatures kept pouring through the center however, and the shielded leaders continued to push forward.
Jess began firing at the opening, knowing she was hitting Scourge, but they continued to advance, undeterred. Another two reached the infantry. Kelsey dodged a club from the first, but a second connected with her legs, upending her. Kaitlyn brought one of the creatures down with a spear as the second raised its club against Kelsey, defenseless on the ground. In a split second a hole appeared in its chest, victim of a well-placed shot from Sam.
Kelsey tried to get up, but stumbled back down, legs were clearly damaged from the strike she had received. Jess moved forward to Kelsey, ready to pull her back to safety. But abruptly one of the shielded Scourge rushed forward at the same time. It reached the downed solider just as Jess did. The beast raised its shield in the air as Jess grabbed Kelsey’s arms and pulled as hard as she could. The shield slammed into the ground where Kelsey had laid just seconds earlier. Jess felt the vibration of the force up her shins.
The wave of Scourge continued to methodically move forward behind their shields.
“Sam – the ceiling!” Jess shouted. “It’s our only chance”
Jess raised her rifle and fired as fast as she could at the ceiling of the cavern. Beside her Sam joined in, spraying the ceiling with fire. Shortly, they had their desired results as stones became loose and fell from the ceiling. They kept shooting. Finally, an enormous piece of rock came loose and started an avalanche of motion from above. The entire structure of the ceiling crumbled, and rocks fell onto the Scourge below with a thunderous crash. The cave darkened and dust filled the chamber.
They had stopped the assault…. but trapped themselves in as a result.
