Re: MAFIA 63: THE SCOURGE [HIDDEN]
CHAPTER 4:
Jess sat atop the hillside, scanning the horizon for movement. They were at a Category 2 geyser, only a couple of kilometers away from the outer gate of the settlement. Due to the size of the geyser and its relative proximity, 7th Regiment was taking point on this run. Often with a geyser this small, they only sent a single regiment, but they had backup this time since it was their first run as lead units. She took her eye off the scope and looked to the geyser as the Runners and Infantry finally reached it and began the laborious process of harnessing the gas.
So far so good.
The snow was beginning to fall harder, and Jess’s eyes strained as she continued to scan the land. If the snow fell any harder, they would have to move closer to have any chance at defending the troops. She could barely make them out as is. She looked back and saw her roommate Kaitlyn guarding the Runner currently filling the cannisters. She had marked her armor helmet with a bright red symbol – a family crest she claimed. Regardless of what it was, it made her easy to spot in the blizzard.
Each member of the Infantry paired with a Runner. Teams of two worked best - the Infantry guarding the Runners while they either filled or compressed their cannisters. Once the fills were complete, the Infantry regrouped into more typical formations.
Jess continued to scan the wasteland and saw nothing. More importantly she heard nothing. That horrible shriek was often the first sign of trouble, and usually alerted the troops of the upcoming skirmish. They geyser may have been close enough that they were in and out so quickly the Scourge would arrive after that had already filled the cannisters and left. Or maybe the geyser was small enough that the Scourge did not even bother. Jess did not know, but she was would be happy to avoid any conflict.
Then suddenly, movement!
Not at the horizon. Not to the north where the Scourge typically assembled and charged, but near the geyser itself. Shouts carried across the air, muffled by the heavy snow. Jess swung her rifle towards the geyser and looked through the scope.
Scourge were attacking. Already at the geyser. Where the hell had they come from?
She rushed into action, taking aim at the first Scourge she saw, and pulling the trigger. It struck the beast in the leg, toppling it to the ground. It crawled away, injured. The rifle wound would cripple it, but likely would not be fatal. A spear abruptly appeared and slammed down through the creature’s head. Kaitlyn hollered as she pulled the weapon from the corpse and charged at another Scourge.
Jess turned and fired at another beast, but she could not tell whether she scored a hit or not. Between the torrential snow and the mix of bodies down below, she had a hard time identifying the Scourge. She made a split-second decision and leapt down the hill.
“Cover me.” She shouted to Samantha who was perched only a few meters away.
Jess raced towards the battlefield, her rifle ready. She pulled down her goggles from her fur hat – her rifle scope useless between the snow and close quarters. She raised the rifle and blasted a beast that came into view to her left, two red streaks slicing through its torso. It fell in a heap. She spun, shot three more times, and brought down another.
A shriek sounded from up ahead. Not a Scourge battle cry, but a human one. Jess ran forward. Up ahead on the ground lay Kaitlyn – her spear still in her hand. The left side of her armor was severely damaged. She tried to get up but stumbled – clearly woozy from the strike she had received. Jess looked but could not see the beast that inflicted the damage.
Footsteps behind her.
She turned and ducked just in time as a stone hammer whooshed above her head. She rolled through the beast’s legs and it howled in confusion – the swing of the heavy hammer had left it off balance. Jess turned at put two rifle rounds into the creature’s head.
The reserve troops arrived with thunder, a dozen Infantry soldiers rushed past her, charging the beasts. They yelped and howled as the spears tore into them. The Scourge fell backwards retreating into the snowy landscape.
“Back to the gates” cried the head of the 6th Regiment.
Jess lifted the semi-conscious Kaitlyn over her shoulders and raced back to regroup with the rest of the Regiment.
She looked back towards the battlefield. They had only lost one soldier.
One too many
Then movement! The solider groggily got up. A couple others went to help.
They had not lost anyone.
Jess smiled.
They had not lost anyone!
