The judge picks up a paper at the bench. “You stand accused of the murder of Nephthys. A reliable witness has confirmed you were at the scene of the crime. What do you have to say for yourself?”

“This is an outrage!” Jamie retorts. “The spurious lies of a fascist, no doubt. Why don’t you have that witness testify, hmm?”

“Because you tried to kill her, too,” responds the judge. “You also stand accused of the attempted murder of Durga. What is your response to that?”

“More lies! Is this tribunal staffed by Eden’s lackeys?”

“You also stand accused of sexual impropriety with an agent of the Eden loyalists…”

“Slander! Lies! e.m.c^42 made that up!”

“…and for the murder of emc to cover it up…”

“Oh bullshit! How could I have done that one if I did the Durga kill, huh?”

“I’m confessing my belief that this whole thing is a sham!”

“Take him away,” the judge says with resigned annoyance.

“Good luck with that, commie scum!” Jamie slips out of his handcuffs and grabs a pistol from a nearby guard’s holster. He frantically fires a couple of shots as he sprints from the room!

Using his superior knowledge of the layout of the building, Jamie makes his way to the gap in the guards’ patrol patterns—the room harboring the remains of Eden’s machinery. The door was supposed to be sealed and locked after worcej’s death and Bunny’s use of the room to get away, but it’s open and unlocked. Jamie has no time to object. He ducks into the room quickly.

I can’t believe these clowns left this unlocked after figuring out Bunny’s exploit, Jamie thinks to himself. Works for me. Now what?

The doors slam shut and lock behind them.

Hmm… Eden has some backup security protocols that are capable of running even despite some extreme circumstances…

“Looking out for me after all this time, are you?” Jamie says aloud to the inert machine. “Thanks, you hunk of bolts, but I’m in a real spot here and it’ll be hard to fix if I’m locked—”

The machinery whirs to life.

“I thought you were unplugged!” Jamie says. “Where have you been, Mr. President? We’ve been trying to get in contact—”

Lightning fills the room and electrocutes the operative. The machinery returns to rest.

The doors unlock and spring open right in front of the pursuing guards, who rush in to secure the scene. The unmistakable pendant of an EDEN LOYALIST is found on Jamie’s person, tucked away inside false pockets.

One of the revolutionaries returns to the remains of Durga’s home to tell her the good news. Unfortunately, Durga already succumbed to her injuries, just a few short minutes before the messenger arrived.
