Re: wD Mafia Master Post
Having being overlooked for promotion to Mod, I’m now overlooked when it comes to being selected to serve on the Mafia Council. I’ve been beaten by JamieT. This must be a new low.dargorygel wrote: ↑Mon Nov 16, 2020 7:30 pmThe Mafia Council of the webDiplomacy site is happy to announce an expansion of the Council. I look forward to leaning on his technical knowledge and experience as we do Council things. I particularly appreciate our past ability to work together despite our differing temperament, continent, and viewpoints. Sincerely, Jamie, thank you! (I also realize that there are many mafplayers who could serve in this capacity. Do not despair, I expect more will be given this shackle at some point.)
Thanks for agreeing to do the thankless task I guess.

Re: wD Mafia Master Post
Last Sunday there was a short outage of the mafia.peterlund.se bot service. Since serveral players asked Dargorygel about it, it seems like it is used and that is nice to see. I thought I would take this opportunity to explain the bot setup.
The reason it was "down" this time was that my ASUS home router seems to need a restart once a month or every second month. Last Sunday my 15 year old daugther Freja came to me complaining that she was not able to reach the internet. That prompted me to check and yes the ASUS was down. I pulled the power cable of the ASUS and after 20 sec I repowered it. After that my home was online again and you got the bot service back. So the mafia community should be grateful that you have Freja (named after the Viking godess of love btw) surveilling the bot internet connection for you.
My ASUS router is probably programmed in some inferiour language, like C, C++, Java or C# since all of those are error prone and programs written in those languages most often contain small memory leaks that sooner or later make my router hang and require a restart. The bot itself is written in a superiour functional language Erlang from this memory-leak point of view. The programmer is not in any way allowed to manage memory removing this class of errors entirely.
The bot can basically run forever. At least it does not suffer from memory-leaks. But of course also it can have bugs. It may encounter unforeseen situation stopping it service, but it does not "age". It runs on a mac-mini on "MacOS High Sierra" that is located behind my ASUS router. The OS needs updates once in a while and that is normally the only times I take it down for OS updates. The ASUS is connected via a 100/100 Mbit fiber connection to the internet.
I am a computer consultant working with 5G development and I do so via my own company. It is my company, not I, that pays for domain fees, internet connections and hardware needed for the bot to run.
The development of the bot software was done during a period when I did not get to do enough of programming at work, so I needed a hobby project of some kind to get this energy out somehow. The mafia bot was indeed a fun hack with lots of different types of problems to solve. I am happy that I started it
Now I get to do lots of programming at work, so now I do not have the same problem.
Anyhow it is fun to see that so many people seem to like it and many many thanks to Dargorygel and to Squigs44 for taking up the admin roles. It has been working very well and only when there is a software/doc issue, I need to get involved.
Have fun stabbing also in the future!!

Peter,
FWIW, is there a way we can contribute to the cost of the bot? It's a tool we use so thoroughly that I'd like to help 'pay you back' somehow.

Re: wD Mafia Master Post
The peterbot is definitely the coolest innovation I've ever seen in any online mafia forum. You are the man Peter!
Re: wD Mafia Master Post
I'd be happy to chip in to run it on the cloud (or to get it a certificate my browser trusts). Thanks for the effort, Peter.

I couldn't play mafia without the bot.
Thank you Peter (and Freja of course)

Re: wD Mafia Master Post
Warm Thanks, Peter... for creating this masterpiece. It is most definitely still used! Please, as worcej mentioned above, let 'us' know if there is some way we can acknowledge your creation, in addition to karma!
And thanks for always being willing and ready to assist when I break it!

No worries... we've got folk. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I'll blame someone else.

I'd say a link to a google doc is the best, but this area would be the best.

I have a setup in the works based on D&D. Put me on the list!
If you want to help DM errr GM, send me a PM. Maybe this game I won't send a God thread to someone still alive.

Re: wD Mafia Master Post
I'm working on the setup for the next game. Unsure if my co-GM will be EMC or possibly someone else, but the setup is based on Among Us and it's a bit... different.
