END OF DAY ONE - THE OUTCOME:

The Witchfinder and his assistants tied a stout rope around the man and dragged him to the parapet of the bridge as he protested angrily.

"YOU MORONS! HOW DARE YOU!" he shouted.

They lowered him, kicking and struggling, over the side of the bride and into the murky river.

"If he swims, or floats, in spite of his bonds, he is a witch! If he sinks, he is innocent!"

He swore and struggled as he entered the water. The surface closed around his head and he tried to hold his breath. Strangely he could feel a tug on the rope and shortly, he felt himself being pulled just up to the surface. A shout came from above.

"He swims! He is surely a witch!"

Gasping and coughing, he was pulled back onto the bridge and, still tied, dragged to the gallows.

"ARGH! IT IS ALL FALSE!" he protested to the last.
