I find that defenses of the form "if I were scum and X I would have done Y and not Z" come most commonly from scum who are upset that they're being scumread for Z even though X isn't true. Combine that with the fact that gold is flimsily offering three scumreads without justification, so it's a little odd to feel the need to offer a defense at all.
