Porn is Evil
Some youth I volunteer with have recently been doing this thing called "No Nut November" which apparently is all the rage right now with Gen Z peeps. It's where they abstain from masturbation and porn and sex for 30 days.
I was curious how widespread this thing is and it's pretty widespread. Apparently the top Youtuber Pewdiepie is pushing for this as well.
What more surprised me when I looked into this is the huge backlash against this from older people (mainly Millenials). There are articles upon articles and videos saying how terrible this is and how it's unhealthy, makes people worse, movement rooted in the alt-right, etc.
Growing up I always assumed jacking off to porn was unhealthy, psychology damaging, and demeaning to women. (Ignoring the whole corrupt industry itself)
I guess my question is, am I way off? Is porn really not that bad and actually healthy?

Re: Porn is Evil
It's about changing attitudes supported by questionable "scientific" studies. After all if the current president of the US starred in 3 porn videos for Playboy, how bad could it be.
Wait, Rudy Giuliani, the president's personal lawyer, said that porn stars have no credibility. We should trust a fine Catholic adulterer and divorcee. :)

Why did this thread get moved to political?
Is asking about the merits to jacking off really considered political?

Nah, but the politics forum isn't about discussing politics. It's just where the site leadership puts threads it might find embarrassing so that the hyper sensitive membership (because apparently Diplomacy players are all delicate flowers these days) don't have to see it.

Re: Porn is Evil
Going back to the subject of the thread, is this anything new? Doesn't every young chap go through a phase in which they decide that having a wank may not be a great idea and decide to try abstaining?
A whole month seems a tad ambitious...

Day 14 of No Nut November:
I woke up and realized that I'm able to slightly levitate off the ground and control the movement of small objects using my no-nut brainwaves.

Only a month? Talk to me when you're doing it for an entire year! Then I'll be impressed.
As for porn in general, be careful where you keep it. My relatives stored their porn CDs where they could be easily reached and I managed to find them when I was too young for that. It affected me mentally to see that weird shit at such a young age. I wasn't prepared, it wasn't the time for me to be exposed to such hardcore stuff.

Re: Porn is Evil
Masturbation is perfectly normal and healthy.
I'm pretty sure No Nut November was made up as a joke. However some people are credulous and foolish.
Some porn is problematic.

Re: Porn is Evil
What Jamie said. In responce to most 'millenials' questioning this, I have only heard ppl says it is a joke. (actually they used the term meme to mean joke... But I did ask for a clarification...)
Also, over-reliance on porn can be harmful, but I suspect porn addiction is not much of a problem - addiction seems to be mostly genetically driven, with certain personalities much more likely to become addicted (except to nicotine which is highly addictive) I think it is only ~10% of the population, and itis possible that a porn addiction is far healthier for society than gambling, alcohol, or opiates.
The porn industry is a different matter, and workers in it need to be listened to, I can't tell you what will help their circumstances.

Re: Porn is Evil
It's hilarious seeing liberals repeat the whole "porn is healthy" mantra like some religious belief when there is plenty of evidence to the contrary. As much as liberals enjoy mocking religion, they themselves adhere very strictly to a set of beliefs. From brain chemistry changes to emotional connection inhibition and ED, porn has been shown to be very destructive and especially so to teenage boys which are still undergoing physical and mental/emotional development. This same demographic is also unfortunately the most targeted by porn.
Re: Porn is Evil
Oh yeah, cause I didn't just say porn can be harmful... Also, who are you calling a Liberal? That has become an insult among those lefties with any backbone!ILN wrote: ↑Wed Nov 20, 2019 6:01 pmIt's hilarious seeing liberals repeat the whole "porn is healthy" mantra like some religious belief when there is plenty of evidence to the contrary. Re: Porn is Evil
I'm more inclined to think "no nut November" as a prank of the type that young whippersnappers enjoy engaging in when their adolescent hormone transformation to potentially/probably sexually active persons is in halcyonic initial glorious stages and an esoteric like, youth based, not for anyone over 21 to understand prankish sexually based.& offering it's youthish participants a social weapon to confuse & embarrass their parents/families.
It's a signal of their newly found awareness of the many ways sex is perceived, used, exploited, commercialised as well as enjoyed or not enjoyed, and that there are taboos & controversies & et al (I haven't the adequate words)
I heard the art & indulgence of onanism described as "self partnering" which I thought an amiable politically correct assertive expression.
To self partner in enjoyment of private sexual self expression or not to ?

Re: Porn is Evil
I suppose that in the unlikely event that some waggish young blighter tells me proudly of their commitment to no nut November I should respond by asking if they are participating in castration for climate change ?

Are we going to have a discussion about the role of masturbation within the marital bed ? Or will we defer those horrors for the foreseeable future?

Re: Porn is Evil
Jesus why can't anyone say it? Porn is the evil of what the post-Traditional world is. A world where God is dead, and little by little everything is monetized on a mass scale bcz ur all empty on the inside without Jesus to guide you through life (I'm not a Christian btw). Porn is just the eventual monetization of sex, completely profaned. Evil yes
Re: Porn is Evil
So much to respond to, so little time. But while I am here now...
I guess the question which we haven't answered is - what is porn? Should we be covering the ancient Roman statues for example? Is the sex shown in your mainstream Hollywood film too much (and I am getting to the age where I am saying "do I really need to see that?")? Or is alll that OK and we are only talking about the truly hard core stuff? Or are we really more concerned that people are...uh...self-pleasuring? It wasn't that long ago that many forms of non-pocreative sex were illegal (e.g. sodomy laws, contraception bans which in the US were stopped by Griswold v. Connecticut which was the foundation for the Roe vs Wade decision)? Are we suggesting we go back there?
And if we are classifying something as evil, we are obviously suggesting some action should be taken? What should that be? If we are talking about censorship, in this age of free speech absolutism, I would argue that porn is just another form of free speech. If you really are a free speech absolutist, it means you have to allow all speech even if you don't like it, which may include porn. Otherwise you aren't for unrestricted free speech.
Or we could go down the responsibility argument. There are lots of arguments against things like a "soda tax" or "junk food" tax because supposedly this is up to "self-responsibility". Again if we make these sorts of arguments it becomes hard to argue for censorship here since, just like junk food, no one forces you to watch porn.

Re: Porn is Evil
What do you expect in a country, the US, that elected porn stars for the president and first lady. Sure he appeared fully clothed, but does anyone want to see Trump naked?
