Century League Signups
Re: Century League Signups
If anon got fixed, at least the last game being anon would not allow targeting based on game one/two standings... That said, Leagues are its own unique thing that some people really enjoy, you must strategize in a unique way, for instance, entering game one, my goal was to *not* get any bonus points (finish 4th or worse), and needless to say, being a goal-oriented person, I crushed it (managed to get zero points from game one)...

Re: Century League Signups
The site is flawed, in that it allows player tracking which defeats anonymous games. I've been raising this for years, but management disagrees with me or doesn't care. We should get rid of the green online dots and the last online timestamp (at least minimize it to a date rather than a specific time).
The Century League scoring system is flawed, but fair in its universal application. Ultimately, it might be desirable to have rounds not go simultaneously but we all know what we're in for.

Re: Century League Signups
@THM, it isn't that there is disagreement there. It's that we unfortunately have limited development resources and something like online status is heavily integrated into multiple parts of the site.
Ideally what I'd see being done is turning off the last seen date (or making it configurable by game type), and removing the green dot indicator (though leaving it on the new forum since the new forum ONLY shows if someone is online on the forum, you can easily avoid this breaking anon by not opening the forum while entering moves), as well as removing access to the "online users.json" page. And ideally, removing the green/grey checks/!!. Adding in a message to the top of games that says "At least 1 person still needs to enter orders" so that NMR's could still be reported to the mod team, with mods being able to see the status still for games they are not in.
I think this could completely eliminate any way of breaking anonymity aside from press analysis which is never 100% accurate.
I obviously can't promise this anytime soon, but I'd like to hear thoughts, especially as it relates to this tournament, on this set of changes. Pros/Cons?

Re: Century League Signups
@jmo: Thank you. That's the first time I remember seeing a productive response when I raised this issue. Agreement on the issue but inability to address due to limited resources, I can understand. In the past, I've been told that the green dot is actually a desirable feature because it allows greater ease in finding players for live games.
That sounds like a good fix to me -- for the site in general, not for this tournament. I don't think it would matter for this tournament unless it were made anon altogether.

I think getting rid of online status for the sake of "anonymity" is stupid and a waste of time. No one goes around checking the online status of all their competitors constantly unless they have nothing better to do with their lives.

Someday, when you are specifically targeted and the playing field is not even, you might feel differently.

Re: Century League Signups
Dear god, I wish this was true, because then I wouldn't have spent hours upon hours of my life as a mod dealing with members who broke anonymity in this way and then used it to pm people in their games. On multiple occasions. Every single time an anon tournament is run, the anon is broken within the first year by someone doing exactly this.
Re: Century League Signups
I'd imagine that anyone who cares enough to do something like this would be a long-time member. Shouldn't they know better than to send PMs in gunboat games? (I'm assuming it's a gunboat game. Otherwise, why would it matter that they pm people?)jmo1121109 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 20, 2018 2:30 amDear god, I wish this was true, because then I wouldn't have spent hours upon hours of my life as a mod dealing with members who broke anonymity in this way and then used it to pm people in their games. You'd be surprised, leon. I know of the situations jmo is referring to. People are stupid. Its happened in every anon tournament I've run.leon1122 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 20, 2018 3:04 amI'd imagine that anyone who cares enough to do something like this would be a long-time member. Re: Century League Signups
Thanks to both of you for volunteering. I'm going to give the position to dr. octagonpus as he is not already in the tournament.
But I really appreciate you volunteering as well Wusti :D

Re: Century League Signups
Ok, apparently I'm pretty dense. In my anon games, I don't see any online status dots. Am I missing some subtle point (as usual)?
