Re: M50 Sign-Up Thread
Practicing my 'anti-no-lynch' tactics...
"What, Ezio? You want to NL??? What are you, SCUM???"
"Every time we NL, a puppy dies..."
"Make Mafia Great Again.... don't NL"
... there... ready.

I'm clearly not scum at this point, so I can and will ask the question.
Before we know anything tangible, why is "no lynch" when we're more likely to hit Town than scum in any way not a good idea?
Showing that I didn't like the way someone else was speaking is more reflective of my biases than any particular scum role.

There are a number of reasons why most of us (other than Ezio, and sometimes me, and maybe some others) push against No Lynches.
Here are what jumps into mind right now, when I am too tired to write/think clearly:
a) Even though the stats are against catching scum D1, we LEARN so much from people's votes. Even later. Like days later. Looking back at D1 voting gives us data.
b) This is sorta just an extension of a) but scum tends to perhaps like NL because that way they don't give any measurable evidence about themselves.
c) Information is what Scum has, and town doesn't have. NL deprives town of information, not JUST the voting deductions, but conversations change when we figure that D1 is going to end up a NL. ALL of us talk with less pressure. Lynching always presses.
d) I dunno........ EVERYONE says NL is bad. And everyone can't be wrong.
That said, there are times that NL might be a good strategy. But never early.
Others imght have more clear explanations. But they probably won't tell you, because we sometimes don't like to TEACH in here. We want to keep the advantage of experience that WE have, and not let other players catch up without the pain and agony of losing, or reading the QT with embarassment, or some other mysterious thing.

And Kitsune is scum.

Suppose no-lynch is a good town strategy for D1.Kitsune wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2019 11:34 pmI'm clearly not scum at this point, so I can and will ask the question.

Then it is also a good town strategy for D2: the exact same argument applies. Odds of hitting scum will be better if we wait until D3.
And so on, it will always be a good town strategy for the exact same reason to wait one more day. The odds of hitting town will always be higher than the odds of hitting scum, and if you wait one more day to start lynching, the odds of hitting scum just keep improving.
So town doesn't lynch until they have to in LYLO. So if we started with 16 town and 5 scum we just let mafia kill 10 people and we vote no-lynch ten times until day 11, when we are forced to lynch or we lose. Now it's 6 vs 5 and the odds of hitting scum have never been better. But town will almost certainly lose at this point, because they have gained zero information about who may be scum.
Isn't that a complete waste of ten days?
Now compare with a different strategy: we always lynch someone. Suppose we are very unlucky, and hit town the first five days. Now it's 6 vs 5 on day 6, the same as with the no-lynch strategy on day 11. But there's an important difference, we have five meaningful voting days to analyse, study how everyone voted, what arguments they gave, how they reacted when they were in danger of being lynched, who defended them, and so on.
Which strategy do you think is better?
If no-lynch was a good strategy then the game would always start with N scum and N+1 town, anything else would be just a waste of time.
Now the above argument works best for plain vanilla games. When there are power roles maybe you can argue that by waiting town will gain information through those power roles and so make a more informed decision, but it doesn't really work like that because scum could also end up killing those roles anyway and in any case the point of lynching is not only to kill scum, but also to gain information even when lynching town. Choosing to not lynch is just letting scum reduce the number of town by one with zero gain for town.
Re: M50 Sign-Up Thread
That makes lots of sense, thank you both :3xorxes wrote: ↑Fri Oct 25, 2019 1:04 amSuppose no-lynch is a good town strategy for D1.Kitsune wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2019 11:34 pmI'm clearly not scum at this point, so I can and will ask the question.

I still don't LIKE the pressure to vote early, but my intention was if I was town that I was going to bluntly refuse to vote unless I had evidence to vote on.
Now I understand why it's useful, I'll incriminate myself by slaughtering the innocent instead.
Game on!

Re: M50 Sign-Up Thread
Honestly, it would be kind of hilarious to see all of us noobs chucked together on a scum team against all the veterans and see how long the scum team could survive.
