It's a bit like shunning a person. When we honour a person, one way is by granting a superior title, eg The Honourable Majormitchell, or Lord Octavious. Removing a person's name from public use is a way of expressing dishonour. I can't shun the Blighter physically, but I can shun him by never using his name publicly.
