I don't know that it's a bad habit. It is all part of his strategy of twisting reality to how he wants it by sheer force of will and shouting. Mrs Oct's Nan uses a very similar strategy, particularly at Christmas, to terrifying effect.

As a negotiating tactic, it's probably sometimes effective. In any particular case, it seems worth a try. But as a strategy repeated ad nauseum...there is a trade off to eroding the credibility of the most important speaker on earth. I'm of course talking about your mother in law.
