When you get to a certain point in your life it may well be simpler to get a new wife rather than to try and remember where you left the old one. I'm very much the same with tape measures, and I'm well under half his age.
As for what the lass sees... it could be something inherent in his general Australian-ness, or maybe as a molecular biologist she's found something about him professionally intriguing? I'm joking, of course. Both of those are clearly nonsense, the former doubly so. Let's call it true love, why not?
