i'm happy to play, but since G1 has already formed i don't want to steal a place in it; so although i would be 7th (atm) i suggest:

G1
1. MadMarx - 4.5 (GR = 350.189)
2. Yonni - 5
3. ben9990 - 10 (message on Discord to start)
4. ATC - 13.5 (GR = 255.26)
5. swordsman3003 - 16.5 (GR = 248.157)
6. TheFlyingBoat - 35
7. rdrivera2005 - 117

G2
8. gimix - 89
9. Sickofpalantirs - 213
10. bo_sox - 302.5 (GR = 142.11)

Oh god this is looking so tempting. If the start date is after September, I'm in. I might be rusty on the online full press thing but yolo.

FTR - That’s not how it works, no games actually form until signups are complete, the idea is that you sign up in order of GR and the chips fall where they may...

That said, historically, an exception is that sometimes a person that isn’t guaranteed a spot in the top game may start the thread and claim to be hosting the top game, securing a spot for themself. For this iteration, I could see where Yonni announces that swordsman has a guaranteed spot in the top game, since very early on those two discussed playing together, but I’d expect that sort of thing to be made clear to everyone sooner than later...

The issue with non-anon is the incentive to look through an opponents' prior games as X country to get clues as to how they might play again. That creates additional workload and introduces a metagaming element.

I dont want to impose my preference, but did want to voice it
I definitely prefer non-anon, it was a factor taken into consideration when I signed up, a point I too want to voice! :-)

Right, this, and also I think it'll be really easy to figure out who everyone is anyway so anon is pointless.

bo may have only been “game” to shed light on site activity (w/o hard stats), rather than literally play in the GR Challenge, but he can confirm... Don’t want anyone to get their hopes up for clashing with elder bo if he’s not intending to play...

I don’t know how much exposure threads used to get but 1100+ views doesn’t seem like an exposure problem. I don’t know if new players immediately competing with older names is the best goal, may be better to master the basics first, which is arguably better done with players of similar ability, and brings us back to the beauty of the GRC... That said, the fewer that sign up for the GRC the more likely you will be able to compete against players of a higher skill set (if you are knew to the site and that is of interest)...
How did new players get into the mix with older and/or better players back in your earlier days? In mine, it was twofold - a) older and/or better players played in public games regularly, and b) newer players signed up in tournaments. I don't really remember it any other way, but neither of those things happen anymore and I don't really know what can be done about it. The forum was fairly exclusive back then as well; lots of great players never showed their face on the forum and preferred it that way. I suspect that is still the case today, but we collectively wouldn't know because we don't encounter them in games that we don't play. Maybe we'll notice them on a GR list, but if they're not on the forum they don't even notice that themselves.

@Durga, hoping to start before the end of September but I'll try get another one going in a month or two.

I really think I didn't spend very long playing in random games. I signed up for things like this and the SoW.

Just reordering Bo and Bonatogether cause it was out of order:

G1
1. MadMarx - 4.5 (GR = 350.189)
2. Yonni - 5
3. ben9990 - 10 (message on Discord to start)
4. ATC - 13.5 (GR = 255.26)
5. swordsman3003 - 16.5 (GR = 248.157)
6. kgray - 17
7. TheFlyingBoat - 35

G2
8. gimix - 89
9. rdrivera2005 - 117
10. Sickofpalantirs - 213
11. bo_sox - 302.5 (GR = 142.11)
12. Bonatogether - 315

I assure you that they do happen. I make a point of playing a game every now and then without any restrictions on who joins. Otherwise how would anyone ever get to experience beating someone from the old school? One of my most enduring memories of my early days here was being thoroughly thrashed by anlari, and I'll be damned if I prevent anyone else from having a chance to lock horns with an old hand.

I will say that new games without restrictions take a hell of a long time to get started with CDs and excused missed turns, but after the first year full of stops and various replacements you do seem to have a full set of players to take the game forward. I don't know if this is better than how it used to be, but I don't think it's worse.

I'm glad you still play in public games. I know some of us do, but it's far less frequent than it used to be. That's how I should have phrased that.

I'm very open to feedback. We definitely need to make reliability a little bit clearer. I don't think starting with a default RR set is a bad idea, but I don't know how that will work with the formula in place or what is needed in order to make that happen.

Yonni, if you could email the mod team and make this GR Challenge a formal thing, I'll give you a banner and we'll see if we can attract some new blood that way.

I don't know why but I feel like the server is just less active in general in terms of classic games running. Tons of FvA and bot games but finding a new press game to join can be hard and finding live games is hard as well. Back in like 2012 I felt like I could get multiple live games a day no issue.

Just checked and there are 6 classic press games (rulebook or full) that are open to the public. I feel like there used to be 30-40 back in the day. High point public games I feel like are also dead.

Maybe that's the answer. The rise of 1v1 and an increased interest in GB has taken away from FP?

And good idea, Oct. I'll try join a random game too.

1v1 and bot games definitely draw numbers away from full press, but we're not getting rid of them

@Kissemo, very glad you joined up. I want to get some of the other 6 digit players at the top to join now. I'm talking to you Belgian Bull, teccles, Zach_Askarinam, twiddlstix...

@Emperor, you can find it here. Choose the classic map ratings. I've added you to the list!

3. ben9990 - 10 (message on Discord to start)
