Scenario with custom rules?

#1 Post by dkarcher » Mon Aug 19, 2024 11:41 pm

I have periodically been considering scenarios that would require the participants, i.e, the players, to follow certain simple rules.

Such a game would be created here at webdiplomacy.net, with a link to a corresponding forum topic, where the custom rules are explained .

A tricky aspect, however, would be that the webdiplomacy site naturally does not recognize the custom rules. Therefore, the game running as expected would depend totally on each player following the rules. On that last point I have repeatedly rejected the viability of my idea. Especially nowadays, players often just do whatever the interface permits.

The only half way viable plan I thereafter considered was to perhaps gather a crowd of 7players before the game setup, and then create the game requiring an access code.

Other opinions or ideas?

I ran a game with special rules once. This is probably the best way to go about it

You can message the mods in advance of your game. They should be able to help you enforce custom rules that all players agree to before the game starts. Not sure if they have capacity for that these days, but they ued to be able to do that anyway. Definitely make it a private game with a password.

Thank you both for the input. In a few weeks, after a different game of mine runs, I plan to act further on this topic.

I will also raise here the general call for ideas from people other than myself regarding this general topic. I am not the only person who has ideas for very simple adjustments to setup and/or the mechanics of play that could yield fun variants.

You probably already know this, but a lot of the variants on our sister website vDiplomacy feature simple adjustments to the classic setup or rules.

I appreciate the tip. That site, vDiplomacy, is new to me. A quick look suggests that mostly map-variants are covered, but I need to later take a closer look. (I myself am interested mostly in variations on the rules and/or setup, i.e. keeping the original map.)

I understood what you were interested in. I haven't tried those variants myself, but they are pretty much all listed alphabetically under "Classic" here:
