Why Italy doesn’t attack me after I backstabbed him?

The bots are often very bad at responding to stabs. It's almost as if they can see a "front line" against their initial enemies, and have a hard time seeing things that are "behind" their lines.

Exactly. I've "hollowed" out bots from behind at least more than once. Here's a couple of examples:

https://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=339763 - watch as I grow as England, gank it up, then rise like a phoenix from the ashes and chomp the German while he sits on the line.

https://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=1057311 - Me as France doing the same thing to England. I think around 1919 I was considering a draw - I was worried that if I attacked England that Turkey would solo... but, even with a couple of mistakes, I made it work.
