2019-04-04
  1. Restyling everything still on the old font
  2. restyling game page look
  3. new buttons
  4. no more green backgrounds on things
  5. Game tabs now show real #'s not estimates
  6. fixing styling issues in desktop view on phones (somewhat, more will be needed)
  7. fixing broken sql install script.
  8. fixing broken link to avalon hill's page on diplomacy
  9. Adjusting time javascript functions to keep them from breaking IE 11 and Safari 9 users.
  10. Prevent the onlineUsers.json file from being updated. Will eventually be able to be removed.
  11. Implement framework code for a new menu div, adding it commented out to allow other developers to see before it's live.

Moved this into it's own topic so people can provide feedback on the new style.

Gunboats even with that tool were not feasible to break because you couldn't know who the people in the gunboat game were, or see message timestamps or see who entered orders when. The initial anon changes accomplished the goal of making gunboats actually anon and I've yet to have someone admit to being able to break anon in a gunboat since.

That said for press anon games if you watch the new forum to see who's online, or if you watch discord online status, online status on any other site, etc, for semi-anon games you can theoretically (this means it's possible but hasn't been done and would be difficult/a lot of effort to go through, for anyone with confusion around English terms) still break anon, which is why tournaments have a new rule preventing discussing who members are.

Thanks for the reminder though, I've updated the initial post in this thread with the necessary disclaimer.

Greetings,
unfortunately not all work is appreciated by the users by default.

Currently there are a couple of changes active for me. The very well functioning buttons for "send", "ready", "draw", "pause" and "cancel" are replaced with some kind of graphic.

I am sorry, i cannot appreciate that change. Because of:
(1) The color of the buttons have changed from grey/white to blue/white. But there is still the "save" button in grey/white. I do prefer the white/grey colors and i do prefer less colors alltogether.
(2) The graphic buttons are bigger than the before ones. That takes up more space and makes the overall screen more required to use the scrollbar. I personally feel that is a negative development.

I have a hard time to understand why someone fixes things which are not broken.

Where there tons of requests to change this, did it cause any problems for anyone???

Kind regards,
James Horst

The buttons change based on what moves you have entered. Ready is grayed out if the moves you have entered are incomplete. Save is grayed out if you have no new moves to save.

Honestly, any cosmetic changes are going to look out of place / unnecessary at first, since we are all used to a certain look that the site has, and those changes break from what we are used to. Give it a month and you will probably be used to the changes.

The short answer to why I changed the buttons, like most of the site they were old, outdated, and not even immediately noticeable to new people as buttons. The new ones while slightly gaudy match current sites a lot better and will never be mistaken for anything expect actionable items.

The disabled buttons are also designed to be stunningly obvious that they are not usable.

I don't mind the updates too much - but can we adjust the color and sizing of the new buttons, potentially? The color could match the text of the links up top to fit the style a bit better, and maybe the button style could be made a bit more modern? I know that's a bit vague, but I'm not really a front-end guy. I just know they look out of place/outdated.

I do like the changes overall, though.

Love this site revamping stuff, but the button black and white colouring made me think I couldn't use them. I know there was a lot of flak last time you threw colours in ;) , but putting a splash of color would make it clear that they were active. Maybe a green outline around the white text? I say green, because that's the theme colour of this site. (I already miss the glorious confusing colours on my home screen.)

If you're not seeing a blue button then you probably need to refresh your cache. Same if you're not seeing the same font style across the site. All the text on the site with some hover over exceptions should now be the same font style.

If anyone has buttons from other sites they prefer or can provide a mock up of something they like better I can work with that, but out of place or old isn't much help. Do keep in mind the menu up top will be replaced soon with a menu that has sub menu dropdowns so you don't have to go 5 clicks deep just to get to the rules.

I thought the font update was part of the april fools thing, lol

But felt like the old font was better for readability...since the new one "curls" a bit too much?

It might be just me, but I don't like the new font as much as the old one, since it's a lot more difficult to read in paragraph chunks -- your eyes are lead to circle a bit too much :D

how do you edit posts? I refreshed the page, and the "edit post" button vanished.

You can only edit posts within 5 minutes of posting them, in most subforums. This is to allow correcting typos.
