General NEIL RITCHIE is correct! Born in British Guiana in 1897, he was Monty’s predecessor as head of Eighth Army, having held only divisional command hitherto. He was soundly defeated by Rommel at Gazala, and was busted back to a division on home duties. He later became one of Monty’s best corps commanders in Northwest Europe. Postwar he led British forces in the Malaya Emergency. He retired to Canada where he died in 1983. His career is a lesson in military leadership, and the need to ensure proper experience before being appointed to high command.
