Clarification (not a new question):

Would a video game character count as "animated" ?
I would say so, but there could be arguments made against. It's not a video game character anyway - but yeah I'd say video game characters count as animated.

Was the book in which this character first appeared nominated for (or won!) a Hugo Award, Nebula Award, or World Fantasy Award?

Is the character female?
This signature is hard to read in dark mode.

This rules out the work of a few people I was starting to think of, such as Emily St. John Mandel (whose last two or three books all achieved considerable acclaim).

Yes, I believe so. The book won an award at the Hugo Awards, but I do not know if that is a Hugo Award per se?

Given the fact you have three guesses to go, and given where you are I will give another hint.

This book was made into a movie that also did quite well, with some very notable actors playing the various roles

Mark Watney is correct!

Congrats Spartaculous! One of my favorite characters in one of my favorite books of all time. The movie is pretty good too! I recommend both.

The author, Andy Weir, won the "Astounding Award for Best New Writer". It looks like it is not technically a "Hugo Award", but it is presented at the Hugo Awards ceremony; DarthPorg's comment that "the book won an award at the Hugo Awards" seems appropriate.
