This will be the final question, so we won't know if it is a man or a woman.

The fact this tennis player has not competed at the Olympics is significant, because, for example, if it's a British person, that actually rules out several candidates. Andy Murray, for example, has played tennis at the Olympics.

True, so we will want to look up male and female tennis players. Not sure if there are any non-binary tennis players who were famous before 1959.

I'm struggling to find one who is also an author, scientist, or mathematician.

I was not suggesting that I thought it was a person of non-binary gender. I regard that as highly unlikely.

Red herring. Consider 1959

Born too early.

I guess Bunny Austin. This sentence from Wikipedia seems important: "He is also remembered as the first tennis player to wear shorts." He also was (according to Wikipedia) a friend of Peter Ustinov (who it looks like once was the subject of a damo-run round of 20Qs before I started playing) and did a lot of speaking and writing on international issues. (It looks like he was briefly drafted into the military in WW2, but never saw combat.)

Good thinking. We're at five guesses now, so either one of us is right or we all lost.

Good catch! In this case, I retract my guess in favor of Spartaculous' guess. It seems I shall not win but at least the guessers will
