We're at five guesses now, so either one of us is right or we all lost.Spartaculous wrote: ↑Mon Jan 29, 2024 7:04 pm
Born too early.
I guess Bunny Austin. This sentence from Wikipedia seems important: "He is also remembered as the first tennis player to wear shorts." He also was (according to Wikipedia) a friend of Peter Ustinov (who it looks like once was the subject of a damo-run round of 20Qs before I started playing) and did a lot of speaking and writing on international issues. (It looks like he was briefly drafted into the military in WW2, but never saw combat.)

Virginia Wade and Fred Perry were guessed after Q20 was asked but before it was answered. William Renshaw was withdrawn before answered. So QM's call on those three.
Other guesses were: Joy Mottram, Dorothy Round, Angela Mortimer and Bunny Austin. Depending on QM's ruling, we may have one guess left.

Emphasis mine. The rules make it clear that my and Jamie's guesses should be counted as free, and therefore our later guesses should be counted as guesses.4. Before the twentieth question is answered, one guess per contestant does not count against the total twenty questions, but additional guesses by the same contestant do.
5. After all twenty questions are answered, there are no more free guesses, and five total guesses (combined among the contestants) shall be allowed.

I agree with the Hominid. But let's wait for Damo now.

As I understand it, those were the five guesses, UNLESS DarthPorg's retraction is accepted, in which case we have one more guess to go. Damo, I think you can decide what to do from here.

1969 Ladies Singles champion Ann Jones winner of 8 grand slam titles.
The famous in or before 1959 was difficult but as a Wimbledon semi finalist in 1958 and US semi finalist in 1959 I thought it reasonable.
The 'author' question was a bit misleading. According to wikipedia she wrote a book entitled "Tackle Table Tennis This Way" having played in Table Tennis world championships.
I was a bit surprised to get all the way through without a male/female dead/alive question!
New one up soon.

Well done. Can't say I'm familiar with her but she obviously did very well.
