Visual artist who is also a published author of fiction, poetry and plays. The obvious ones don't match the demographic data (William Blake, anyone with E in first name, anyone not born in Europe).

"Born in" and "From" and "British Isles" and "Britain" have been thrown about rather loosely. Lets get precise.

Born on the island of Ireland?

Okay thanks Damo.

I think we can safely assume this person was born in, and is from, England or Wales, without needing to waste another question on it.

The only one I can think of that fits, Winston Churchill, would not have been passed as a political figure. Plus I guess he was born in Oxfordshire, SE England, so definitely out.

So stuck on this author AND visual artist thing. There are so few.

Just to make sure I understand the rules of this thing correctly (for those who've been playing recently, this has gone wrong with me before, hence me asking):

Is internet allowed as a tool?
I've a someone that meets the brief perfectly, but have used internet in doing so and want to make sure I don't break any rules before I make a guess.

Yes you can look stuff up on the internet. We all do. It's not a pub quiz.

Damn. He met all the criteria, at least. English painter and illustrator, born in Birmingham in 1890, was also a published writer, probably had quite radical political views but was not hugely politically active.

Four questions remain.
