Born in the Midwest or West as defined by the US Census?

(I found someone who almost works, but she appears to have acted in more than one movie, so I don't think it can be her.)

Yes. (See the first map here for reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_regions_of_the_United_States)

I would be extremely surprised and impressed if someone correctly guessed right now. You are missing several important pieces of information about her life's work and the reasons she is famous.

"Activism" is a loaded, complex word. Do you want to clarify your question?

Eh, I'll just go ahead and give two answers. The first is, if you include activism related to her artistic endeavors, well, yes, of course she was encouraging interest in those same artistic endeavors, if that counts as activism.

If your definition of activism is a more limited one (relating to political or social issues), then the answer to your question is still yes, I guess, but I would not say that that is what she primarily known for.

Fair enough. Sorry my question was so vague.

No worries. It was a good attempt to figure out what other activities she was famous for.

Just a comment: I suspect this person also has some other arts thing going on. Maybe visual art. (I don't think anyone should ask this though, because it won't really narrow it down much.)

No, died on or after January 1, 2004.

Here is a hint: we know she had one movie acting credit to her name. When that movie was being written, the director impersonated her for one of roles; she ended up being recruited to fill in the role herself.

So she was in her mid-sixties, or older, when she died, which was within the past couple of decades.
