Elbridge Gerry is an excellent guess, but I checked and he certainly had a university degree.

For Person B, I'm going to go with Daniel Boone.

And for Person A, Jim Bowie.

Although born in the US, he renounced US citizenship to become a Mexican.

Although died before the Civil War, he was a slave trader and "could be seen as aligned with the Confederacy".

What they have in common is things named after them: Sweet Fanny Adams, Murphy's law, the Bowie Knife, and the Daniel Boone cap.

Alas, no. Out of curiosity what is the connection with the names Sweet Fanny Adams and Edward Murphy?

Ah... just seen the follow up post. Cheers!

I'll guess Samuel Adams.

I'll guess Samuel Adams.
If that's not right, then I'll use a second guess on Charles Lynch.

He scores off the rebound!

Colonel Charles Lynch, traitor to the crown and war criminal, and most likely origin of the term "lynching" (other nasty sods have also claimed the "honour", but Charles seems the most likely)

I'm surprised my references to Hanging Rock's avatar didn't draw more guesses in that area earlier...

Most people are playing for honour now, yes :). Very much a 2 horse race.

The last man is the hardest, I'd say, and I was half expecting no one to guess him from the start... Although there are a couple of very juicy clues in the previous posts...

Just to be totally clear, this was the correct guess for Person 'A', right?

Oh, no, it must be "B" because he died before the Civil War.

Can we just sabotage the game? If Colonel Lynch was supposed to be one of the two easy ones, I can't imagine what the hard one will be.

Easier in the sense that I'd say almost all members of the site are aware of the term lynching, and most will have heard at some point that it comes from someone's name. Not as easy as Murphy, who could have justified a spot in a solo game. Sweet Fanny Adams is pretty well known to Brits, but I suspect that her fame drops off a cliff overseas.

Person A... I never knew was an actual person until quite recently... But that could just be me. There is quite a useful clue in post five score and tether, and a damned near giveaway hint was posted relatively recently for any keen amateur etymologists out there.

Failing that, the game will end tomorrow evening with JECE as worthy winner

So just to be clear, can you be clear?

You seem to take inordinate pleasure in being unclear.

A riddle within a riddle: sometimes we need a break from being articulate diplomats with clear messages and instead favor gobbledygook.
