So just to be clear, can you be clear?

You seem to take inordinate pleasure in being unclear.
Of course, old chap. The game will end this evening unless JECE tells you who it is before then. Although I guess someone else could work it out too.

Was there anything else you need clarifying?

Tick tock tick tock

Close of play will be at 22:00 tonight, BST (UTC+01:00)

Will anyone claim the final name before JECE?

4. Not a musician
5. Had a college degree
6. Man
7. Not born in Europe
8. Not associated with the performing arts
9. Died before 1st January 2000

11. Held a military or government position

13. US citizen for part of life
14. Fought in war of liberty or independence or civil war or a rebellion
15. Political Prisoner
16. Did not fight on US side in American War of Independence
17. Died a natural death
18. Did not write a major work of literature
19. Served in a "Congress" which was probably not the US Congress.
20. Argued in favour of the Union before the outbreak of the American Civil War, but was seen as aligned with the Confederacy after war commenced.

To phrase another way:

He is a human man who was born somewhere other than Europe, and died of natural causes before 1900. He was college educated. He is not associated with sports, music, performing arts, literature, philosophy, or religion. He was a US citizen for part of his life. He did not fight in the American War of Independence, but he did fight in a war of liberty / independence, or a civil war or rebellion. He was a political prisoner at some point. He argued in favour of the Union before the American Civil War broke out, but was later seen as aligned with the Confederacy. He held a military or government position, and served in a “Congress” which was probably not the US Congress.

And:

He probably gave his name to something.

I keep coming across potential candidates, but I can't find one who was a political prisoner and fulfils all the other conditions.

Louis Wigfall?

"Ardent secessionist Louis Wigfall was one of the most hated men in the North in 1861, his name a byword for treason. On the eve of war, he was a United States senator from Texas staunchly set against compromise with the North. After a brief military career, he became a Confederate senator and opposed the central government of Jefferson Davis."

Could it be that you're using a more strict definition than that outlined by the actual question?

A is actually quite tricky... somewhat ironically as last year I heard his name spoken on multiple occasions.
Bringing a reminder back up from the depths of the thread.

I'm actually just looking for the words "prison" and "jail" in their biographies, so I don't think I'm doing that.

Awww... and JECE has been deliberately avoiding answering to give you a chance as well.

Go on, man. Just a few hours left. You can do it!
