Depends what type of writer. An academic/philosopher/political pamphleer would probably not qualify as an entertainer but a poet/playwright/novelist/comedic journalist would.

Yes, I am just trying to generate ideas for why this person might have been known, since that's the area we have the vaguest information on at the moment. That he was Irish just came to mind before the more obvious gender constraint.
