I've got a gut feeling that this writer doesn't pass the dart test by a loooong shot.
What's the dart test?
It's one of the earlier rules

"Please choose people from history, or movie/TV/literary/video game chars/etc. characters that, if you were to throw a dart out the window, at least 50% of people hit would know this character."

It was dropped because, to put it as delicately as possible, it was bollocks.

Besides which I chucked a hundred darts out of the upstairs window and didn't hit anyone other than a cat

Actually, Ralph Ellison served in the merchant marine.

Is it him?
No.

Yeah, unfortunately the sheer number of "notable" people makes it difficult for one to know all of the "notable" people.

I swear I wasn't trying to win the game by choosing a hard person, it's who I've had in mind for a while. I think they are quite well known, but in hindsight, I can see why people might be struggling to figure it out.

(I don’t think I’m breaking the two consecutive guesses rule but I don’t think so since our 20 questions are up)

Is it Joseph heller, author of catch-22?

I'm not going to answer this until I get confirmation from someone experienced.

I think the consecutive question rule is especially important during the last five questions, because people who have been participating could get left out.

I think the only time to break that rule is if people are taking excessively long to ask.

There are 544 people on this list:
https://www.thefamouspeople.com/american-poets.php

I checked the first 100 and none fit the bill.

They're your rules, but it doesn't look like you changed them. There isn't a rule prohibiting two consecutive guesses. There is a rule prohibiting more than two consecutive guesses (or more than three consecutive guesses if one uses a free guess, but there are no more free guesses since 20 questions have already been answered).

Entirely possible that we are just off track looking at writers rather than looking at other people who also wrote but were more prominent for something else.
