We can't change the things we can't control
It's summer somewhere
So you shouldn't be so cold
But you can't even look me in the eye if you tried
Oh, we can try, we can try

And instead I will make my free guess: Roland Deschain, aka the Man in Black, aka the Gunslinger.

Hold on, let me check on this "real world" thing before you count my guess.

Balki got it!

I got caught up, because I knew he first appeared in 1978, but it was a novella. He didn't appear in a full novel til 82.

I almost did Eddie Dean instead, that may have been slightly more tricky.

Since Balki requested a hold on his guess, I'm going to say that that makes the current pending guess :)

Well, your guess is invalid anyway as you've attempted to guess two different characters.

The thing that tipped me off was the part about the old 19th century poem that inspired the first novel. I didn't realize see that there was a 1970s novella. I thought you were alluding to the poem.

Hah, I should have considered this too. I think since Stephen King did not write the poem, it can't technically be certain it's the same character.

The age question was tough, since we don't really know his age, but for many reasons I think it's safe to assume he's over 23 in The Gunslinger.

Nice job!

Does this mean we get three games in one day?

Ohhhh, ha ha, right, that's different.

(I did almost guess Randall Flagg when I thought it could have been the Stand...)

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere
Man, step away for a few hours to do some real work...
What was the relevance of these lyrics to what was going on in the thread? And were you thinking of the Tears for Fears version or the Gary Jules version?

..oh, you were thinking of the Tears for Fears version, and who originally wrote the lyrics. Nice!

Would you believe this is a coincidence and I just really like Tears for Fears?
