It is said that Diocletian – the Roman Emperor – had thirty-three wicked daughters. He managed to find thirty-three husbands to curb their unruly ways, but the daughters were not pleased and under the leadership of their eldest sister Alba they plotted to cut the throats of their husbands as they slept.

For this crime they were set adrift in a boat with half a year’s rations, and after a long and dreadful journey they arrived at a great island that came to be named Albion, after the eldest. Here they stayed, and with the assistance of demons they populated the the wild, windswept islands with a race of giants.

The last of the giants, Gog and Magog, are the guardians of London to this day.

So, all that said...

... is it Tweedledum and Tweedledee?
Invalid guess

Does the film title of their first (and possibly only) appearances have either or both character names in it?

Very interesting narrowing,

A presumably comedy/dramatic pairing from a movie with some extraordinary situation that seems appropriate for kids and adults alike. Maybe like a Back to the Future or Ghostbusters or Bill and Ted type thing. Except those don’t work since one is a team and the others aren’t occupationally connected (maybe bill and Ted if you count their band). MIB was a much better good fit. Or maybe some mildly comedic superhero duo that doesn’t wear masks? Hmm.

Going to need to dig deeper.

Would this pairs movie be considered a form of sci-fi or fantasy? (including sub genres like sci-fi comedies, supernatural comedies, apocolyptic, etc)
16. Yes, it definitely has sci-fi or fantasy elements.

TBH I think it's probably Bill and Ted

I made my free guess, how do future guesses work?

Maybe not though. They're almost completely comedy, though I would argue "student" is an occupation

If you guess, it now counts against the 20 questions total, or the total 3 guesses we get after hitting question 20 if you ask after that point.

I'll guess it so it doesn't count:
Bill & Ted?

It would count towards the 20 questions.

Excellent!
*plays air guitar riff*

Yes, it's Bill S. Preston, Esquire and Ted (Theodore) Logan!

The "occupation" question honestly kind of threw me for a loop and I took a very liberal interpretation of it:

Is their relationship to each other based off an occupation based connection?

(i.e. co-workers/associates, entertainment duo, crime solving detective and his assistant, police partners, tour boat captain and incompetent first mate, nutty doctors who work together in Korean War, etc)
Their connection is based on the occupation that they *want* to have (awesome rock stars) not the one that they do have (high school students in the first movie, something else in the other two). Based on the "entertainment duo" example given in the question, I felt it would have been more misleading to say no.

I was going to guess it once we got to 20, I didn't want to "waste" another question

The proper response here would have been "Bogus!" ;)

VI had the idea first, but dismissed it due to the occupation thing.

..and there was no way I could do just Bill or just Ted by themselves - that would have been just plain... wrong.

The presence of time-travel was the thing that made answering the question about "a very close world to ours" difficult, especially since the premise of the movies is that history is *exactly the same* as ours.

"Best 4 out of 7?"
"Damn right!"

You can take the win and host the next game Chaqa, I've never even seen a Bill & Ted movie, so you deserved it.

I wouldn't have described their connection as primarily occupation based, but the way the questions were asked and answered still fits even with that in mind. For what it's worth, I always thought they were friends first and students/musicians second.

I could've guessed that movie, though I was also thrown off with the year, for whatever reason I thought the movie was older than 1985 but a quick wiki check just now informed me I remembered wrong.

I also was surprised that a duo was chosen without prior agreement, but it was a nice change.

Fun fact: the german translation for their iconic quotes are pretty wild, 'party on, dudes' becomes 'Volle Kanne, Hoschi' (literally 'full can/jug, [Hoschi]', with Hoschi coming from the name Horst but in this case it means more like 'lovably idiot') and 'be excellent to each other' becomes 'Bunt ist das Dasein und granatenstark' (literally 'colourful it is, existence, and grenade strong' with grenade being used here to increase/multiply the meaning of strong).

Anyway, thanks for the run, see you in the next one.

Yeah, I could have made the argument either way on that one. It was their passion for wanting to be rock stars (and how that drives the overarching plot of the three movies of uniting humanity through music) that swayed me.

I knew for sure it was after '85, but I double-checked just in case. '89 surprised me at first but then it was like, oh yeah. I remember going to see it in the theater but was certain I was driven by someone else to see it.

There was a discussion not too many games ago about switching things up a bit for the sake of variety and it seemed there was some receptiveness to the idea - I made sure to warn everyone at the start that something new was up - hopefully the gang here wasn't too weirded out by the idea.

Heh, I didn't know that. Kind of interesting, and more useless trivia for my already overfilled noggin!
