I also think that the proposed 24-hour time limit is too short.

We got a pretty huge hint with the Wikipedia pages. This is definitely solvable.
More than 1,700 pages link to Marc Chagall. So multiply that by however many people have been mentioned in the thread who have wikipedia pages, and that'll give you an idea of how many you have to sort through to brute force this.

It should either be a hard time limit or a limited number of guesses. But it's already been open season for 8+ hours and nobody has put forth a guess, so I don't understand why we're asking for more time when we're not using the extra that has already been given.
More like 1,200 to 1,300 articles, but yeah, point taken . . .

Still, there must be a way. Many of those articles aren't about people, and perhaps the other people mentioned in the thread might not have quite so many links from other pages.

Ok cool thanks Damo.

I will let someone else take the bonus extra last question, although I'd be happy to brainstorm what a good question might be. Suggestions including:

"Is it a wealthy patron of the arts?"
"Did he leave Russia or the USSR before Stalin came to power?"
"Was he ever on the cover of TIME Magazine?"

1,700 items that one would have to sort through to check for men before you also check if they're notable (hoping that you've heard of them or recognize them).

But also, this is just brute forcing and I think that's against the spirit of the game, which may not stop others from trying to do it, but I'm not going to bother.

We could ask about these lists:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_R ... _composers
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_m ... _composers

We could be dealing with someone who was primarily famous in the 19th century.

Another option could be to dive into conductor lists, such as:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category: ... rs_(music)
.wikipedia.org
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category: ... rs_(music)

The Spirit of Twenty Questions, by Fox Castle (2023)

I'm looking forward to reading the book when it's published!

But seriously, it's at least 500 less than 1,700 to sort through. There may be other ways to automatically sift through the 1,200 or so remaining pages.

I'm just using the Marc Chagall page as a reference, I haven't looked at any others.

Good luck with your project!

Maybe we want to use the question to get a better idea when that person went out from 'the east' to 'the west'? It might be he fled before the revolution.

I don't know this guy, but I'll go with with Serge Diaghilev since he seems to tick all the boxes.

- Connected to music as founder of ballet company
- Connected to painting as an art critic and patron
- Composed as a teenager but not a composer,
- Born in Russia in 1872 and died in Paris in 1929
- Wikipedia page mentions having dated Vaslav Nijinsky, who Foxcastle previously mentioned in the thread

Gotta be, right?

Even if it's not Serge Diaghilev, I think that searching for someone with connections to Nijinsky is our best bet here.

Ugh, of course. An an art critic would not be a painter but still strongly associated with painters and painting.

Anyway, never heard of this guy!

Whew. I was so close to dismissing the guy because I couldn’t find any reference to anybody previously discussed since I completely missed the Nijinsky name drop. Seemed such a match though I ended up going through this thread I think 5 times to see what I missed.
