Oh, I wonder if it's a Muppet.
They are furry, many of them don't represent real animals, and they have appeared in a variety of media including TV, films, and video games.

Sorry just noticed I missed this. Yes, for sake of this question I would consider these sorts of animal based characters (sonic the hedgehog, fozzy bear, miss piggy, angry birds, ninja turtles) as categorized as animals and can be confidently crossed off your list.
